Apulia

Description

Apulia is the easternmost region in Italy: the Cape of Otranto is just 30Km from the Albania coast; it is a wonderful intermingling of mountains, woods, untouched sea and artistic treasures of undisputed value. Bari, the regional capital, was enriched with splendid monuments during the Middle Ages: the Basilica of San Nicola, in Romanesque style, was built under the Norman domination, as well as the Norman-Swabian Castle and the Cathedral of San Sabino. The Castel del Monte, in Andria, is one of the most famous castle in the world, due to its characteristic octagonal plan; it was built by Frederick II of Swabia and was declared by UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lecce is also known as "Florence of the South" for its beautiful Baroque style monuments. Alberobello, in the province of Bari, is the capital of "trulli": typical conic buildings in dry stone. Traces of the Greek presence in the region are on display in the Archaeological Museumin Bari. Apulia is a region to be discovered that will satisfy even the most demanding tourist!
