Description

Discover Camaiore: A Hidden Gem of Versilia

Welcome to Camaiore, the largest municipality in Versilia, nestled in a beautiful valley at the foot of the majestic Apuan Alps. This charming town, once known as "Campus Maior," boasts Roman origins and a rich, fascinating history. During the Middle Ages, Camaiore flourished thanks to its strategic location along the Via Francigena, and in the 15th century, it was fortified to protect the population from frequent attacks.

One of the treasures of the area is the Abbey of San Pietro, a monumental complex founded by the Benedictines in the 8th century. The Abbey, with its simple yet imposing Romanesque architecture, includes a church, a bell tower, an arch, a cemetery, and a monastery, all surrounded by ancient walls. Inside the three-nave church, you can admire a rare 17th-century "Bachian" organ, a true treasure for music and art lovers.

Don't miss the chance to visit the Parish Church of Saints John and Stephen, a magnificent example of 12th-century Romanesque architecture. Its three-story double-arched bell tower and the baptismal font, carved from a 3rd-century Roman sarcophagus, testify to the historical and artistic wealth of this sacred place.

Camaiore also hosts the Church of the Immaculate Conception and Saint Lazarus, built in 1610, and the splendid Villa Borbone delle Pianore, an elegant noble residence built between the 18th and 20th centuries. Every corner of Camaiore tells a story, offering visitors a journey back in time, through art, culture, and breathtaking landscapes.

Come and discover Camaiore, where every stone and every monument whispers ancient legends and tells the glorious past of this enchanting Tuscan land. A unique experience that will leave you breathless and eager to return again.
