Carro

Description

Town in the province of La Spezia, situated in the Alta Val di Vara, Carro is the ensemble of the historic villages of Agnoli, Pera, Pavareto and Cerreta (which is, among other things, the birthplace of St. Anthony Mary Gianelli), and from small districts such as Castello, Ponte Santa Margherita, Ziona and Travo (an old farming centre, where a central mill and some very old farm buildings still stand). It is famous for the production of handmade clay paknown as "I testi". The main centre, Carro, located downstream of the hill of Velva, on one of the crossings that enables the communication between the Val di Vara and Sestri Levante. It is a center with an agricultural and commercial vocation, part of the park of the Cinque Terre, surrounded by chestnut and pine trees. Carro is also the birthplace of the famous violinist Paganini.
Founded by the Romans during the clashes with the Ligurian, it was a possession of the Vicariate of religious Framura. In the XI century it became a fief of the Estensi family, then it was ceded to the Malaspina family, who left the property to the Da Passano Family. In the first half of the XIII century, it became a town with its own Council, and due to important agreements with the Republic of Genoa, Carro was granted with the title of Podestà. The town belonged to the Fieschi until the first half of the XVI century, then, and it shared, with other districts in the area, similar historical events, until it was inserted into the Kingdom of Sardinia and in that of Italy.

Not to miss:
The Parish Church of San Lorenzo of the XV century, with a richly decorated interior, which features the Madonna del Carmine of the artist Domenico Piola and San Lorenzo of Giuseppe Dorffmeister.
The Church of the Holy Name of Mary in the medieval town of Zion. It was already a parish church in the XIII century and features a triptych of the first half of the XVI century representing the Madonna and Child with Saints Giovannino, Andrea and Lorenzo.
The Parish of San Giorgio in the village of Castello.
The Mineral Museum which preserves various samples of minerals and precious stones.
