Casamicciola Terme

Description

The town is immersed in greenery which continues to attract a considerable flow of tourists, not only to the thermal water springs that supply the treatment establishments, but also its northern exposure makes a summer stay particular pleasant.
The thermal sources characterize this marvelous locality, so much so that an ancient legend recalls how Ulysses, on landing in Ischia, regained his vigour and strength from the waters of the Gurgitello, a stream that flows into the sea near the present day pine grove of Pio Monte della Misericordia.
Casamicciola Terme is presented as a long, green arch, dominated by Mount Epomeo and enclosed between Punta La Scrofa and the Gran Sentinella hill which overlooks the port inlet.
The town is formed by an upper part and a lower part: the upper part, characterized by charming hills and romantic valleys shaded by copse, includes the areas of Piazza Majo, Rita, Gran Sentinella and, closer to the sea, Piazza Bagni.
The inner areas, which are accessed by narrow streets, in a peaceful, calm atmosphere, offer paths that cross pine groves and chestnut orchards and present an immense view over the Gulf of Naples.
The lower part, which is more modern, is located on a small, natural harbour with a tourist port formed by a long pier with two branches where ferries and hydrofoils also dock and which opens onto Piazza Marina, at the heart of the economic and social life in the town. Here you can find the main shops, coffee shops, restaurants and the famous Parco del Castiglione.
The historic monuments worth a visit include Pio Monte della Misericordia, the main thermal treatment spa designed in 1890, the Church of Buon Consiglio which overlooks the initial port quay, the Church of St. Gabriel and the Geo-Physics Observatory founded by Giulio Grablovitz.
