Cittiglio

Description

A delightful hillside town of the Valcuvia area, situated near the foot of Mount Sasso del Ferro and of Monte Nudo, at just 4km from Lake Maggiore, Cittiglio was mentioned for the first time in a parchment of 998 with the name "Cistellum. The village is divided into two districts: the older one, of San Biagio entitled to the patron of the Romanesque church present here, and a newer one of XVI-XVIII century origins.

Among the major sites of interest, not to miss:
- the Church of San Biagio, built in Romanesque style and flanked by a Bell tower built between the X-XI centuries;
- the Church of San Giulio, in the Baroque style with an elegant porch and a fine carved wooden pulpit that features the "Presentation of Jesus in the Temple" by Bernardino Castelli;
- Casa Corti, with frescoes of the XVII-XVIII century;
- House Ripamonti, former Palazzo Della Porta, with frescoes of the XVIII century;
- the Three Waterfalls, a series of impressive jumps that the river San Giulio performs in the district of Pianella;
- the Museum Alfredo Binda, which preserves a series of memorabilia of the popular bicycle rider, who was born in Cittiglio.
