Colli sul Velino
Description
A small town located between the hills of Sabina area, in the province of Rieti, Colli sul Velino was inhabited since ancient eras, already known at the times of Terentius Varro, who in the district of Grotte San Nicola, had a private villa built. There is only limited historical information about the town, not because it experienced significant historical events, but probably because it was just a district of the town of Labro until 1962.
Sites of Interest:
- the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena, originally built in Baroque style;
- the remains of the Church of San Lorenzo, once one of the most important religious buildings in the area;
- the remains of a Roman villa of the first century B.C.;
- the remains of the Watchtower of Morro Vecchio, built between the X and XI century;
- the Lake of Ventina, in the prehistoric ages was known as "Lacus Velinus";
- the Natural Reserve of Lakes Lungo and Ripasottile.
