Faggiano

Description

Faggiano has been built on a small hill at 36m above sea level.
Its name derives from the word "beech tree" as it seems that time ago, a large beech wood surrounded this area.
The first evidence of the history of this town are relative to the Middle Ages, period in which the some monks lived near to the actual village. Traces of their presence and crypts have been found in some tuff (tufo) caves nearby.
Poor hamlet with few inhabitants till the XII century, it became very rich and powerful when after the death of Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg, Albanian parties settled themselves here.
Its economy is based on agriculture and the cultivation of vineyards and olive trees.
Famous in its Regional circle for the real life Nativity Scene which is regularly organized during the Christmas holidays.
Of artistic and historical interest is the visit to the Crypt of Saint Teodoro of the XI century, and to the Castle of Saint Crisperi, built in the late Renaissance.
