Fiè allo Sciliar

Description

Fiè allo Sciliar (Völs am Schlern in German) is a municipality in the province of Bolzano, located at the foot of Mount Sciliar, in the unspoiled nature of the Natural Park of the Sciliar. Although the archaeological finds attest that the area was inhabited since the Bronze Ages, the village, known with the name "Felis", is mentioned for the first time only in 888, in an act of donation. During the Middle Ages, the local administration and justice was assigned to various aristocratic families, such as the Lords of Fiè and with Leonardo da Fiè, Governor of Alto Adige, the entire region lived the period of its greatest splendor.
In addition to the beautiful and picturesque natural landscape, dominated by the Sciliar massif, green meadows, wide valleys and paths enriched by small shrines and crucifixes, we suggest a visit to:
- Castel Presule;
- the Parish Church of Santa Maria Assuta, in Fiè di Sotto, which preserves within a beautiful Romanesque crucifix, an altarpiece in late Gothic style, neo-Gothic paintings, a pulpit and an organ in Baroque style;
- the Church of Santa Margherita, in Fiè di Sopra, with its valuable altar and XV century paintings;
- the Church of St. Catherine, with frescoes of the school of Bolzano;
- the Church of San Giovanni Battista, with an altarpiece and frescoes attributed to the artist Anton Psenner of Umes (1821);
- the Church of St. Nicholas in Presule;
- the Parish Museum.
