Noci

Description

Noci, town of the province of Bari, situated at short distance from the Adriatic sea at 28 km and the Ionian Sea at 35 km. Its location offers a mild climate even though it was built on the plateau of the Murge at 424 meters above sea level.

The 20% of the territory is a green forest, with one major tree species "Quercus Troiana", commonly known also as Fragno

The local economy of the approx. 20000 inhabitants is quite dynamic, Noci is the seat of important industries of the building trade, water processing and advanced tertiary. For no reason it will betray its agricultural and farm talent from which gives important benefits the cheese and salami industries. Thee are also a lot of employees assigned to the livestock farms.

Not having reliable documents on the origins of Noci, there are no certain indications. The tradition tells that the settlement was founded in 565 on request of the Roman Emperor Giustiniano but recent research date the foundation to a later date under the Norman dominion.

For certain, the lands were disputed in the Middle Ages between the aristocratic families, such the Acquaviva, until it became part of the County of Conversano.

Not far from the city center, at 6 km, there is the Abbey of Barsento. The tradition says that it was built at the times of Pope Gregorio Magno in 561, but the actual building is of XI-XII century. Of the same period is the Church Matrice, around which the first district was built Casale di Santa Maria dele Noci, from which the actual town takes its name.

Not to miss: the Church dei Cappuccini which preserves in the sacristy a painting of the Madonna by Luca Giordano.
