Riolo Terme

Description

Located in the foothills of the province of Ravenna, Riolo Terme is a well-established spa resort in Emilia Romagna. The city's name derives from a small stream in rainforest nature, the Rio Doccia, where a Castle, ordered by the Sforza arose. Only in 1914, when the importance of its mineral waters were certified, it assumed the name of Riolo Bagni. The current name, however, dates back to 1957.
The first settlements in the Valle del Senio date back to the Neolithic Ages and archaeological finds have brought to light remains of several populations: Umbrians, Etruscans, Celts, Romans, Goths and Lombards. In 1338 the municipality of Bologna undertook the construction of the new fortress, capable to hold about 300 soldiers. Between 1400 and 1481 several dynasties alternated to the rule of the city, until it was entrusted by Pope Julius II to the jurisdiction of Imola, under the domain of which it stayed for about three centuries.

Sites of Interest:
- La Rocca (the fortress), reinforced by the Lords of Bologna in 1388 to safeguard their territories. With its square keep and towers, it is an interesting example of medieval military architecture. Today it houses the Museum of the landscape of the Apennine of Faenza;
- the XIV century defensive walls;
- the Abbey of San Pietro in Sala, whose construction dates back to the IX century and was assigned by to the order of the Benedictine monks. Of the ancient church today remain the crypt and the bell tower with a XV century bell;
- the Church of Saints Stephen and Martino, rebuilt in 1690;
- the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, which houses paintings by Giovanni Piancastelli of the Gandolfi and by Gottarelli;
- the Church of St. Andrew the Apostle, which was built in the 50's of the XX century;
- the Church of San Giovanni Battista, built in 1960, which features a panel composed of 900 ceramic tiles;
- the Grotto of King Tiberius, one of the most important and interesting speleologist caves of the Vena del Gesso;
- the Spa establishment.
