Small town in the province of Grosseto, at the scope of the Alma mount, Scarlino is and important touristic location with its typical medieval aspect.
During the Middle Age it was subjected to the Aldobrandeschi’s jurisdiction; in 1278 it was conquered by Pisa and, finally, in the XVI century by Florence.
The histical center of Scarlino is dominated by the Aldobrandeschi Fortress, an imposing medieval castle built in the X century, characterised by three different towers, linked by boundary walls.
The medieval Church of San Donato, already mentioned in a document of 1188, was renovated during the XVII and the XVIII century. Vanni and Emanuele Appiani’s sepulchral monuments (Jacopo III’s sons, lord of Piombino) are preserved here.
We also mention the medieval Palazzo Comunale and Palazzo del Conte and the city walls, surrounding almost the entire town.
