Torgiano

Description

The town's name derives from the name of the god Janus, to which an ancient watchtower was entitled. Municipality in the province of Perugia, located on a hill covered by green vineyards and olive groves, where the river Tiber meets the Chiascio, Torgiano is a medieval village, in which are still visible large sections of its ancient walls and is famous for the production of excellent wines and olive oils. The surrounding environment offers the opportunity to follow nature trails that run along the river Tiber, in contact with unspoiled nature.
The area was a Roman settlement, as confirmed by the name, and an active trading point on the Tiber river. After the fall of the Empire, the territories were prey to the invasions of the Barbarians and in 595 A.D. Goths sacked the town that for a while, had been contended between Lombards and Byzantines.
In the XIII century the city of Perugia, in order to consolidate and make more defensible its borders, decide to restore the ancient castle of Torgiano and in the first half of the XV century, the town acquired a series of rights and was proclaimed municipality. Devastated by the troops of the Duke of Valentino in the XVI century, the town managed to avoid the looting to which Perugia was subject a few years later.
