Vigolo Vattaro

Description

Vigolo Vattaro is a town in the province of Trento, located on the plateau of Vigolana, at a few kilometers from Lake Caldonazzo. The centre protected, at north, by the Marzola massif, is characterized by narrow streets and charming views, and is a perfect starting point for excursions on foot or by mountain bike, between the pastures of Virgolana or Marzola.
The center has very ancient origins, which date back to the Bronze Age, as evidenced by the archaeological finds retrieved in the district of Doss. Politically connected to the Municipium of Trento and being located along the Via Claudia Augusta, which connected the Valsugana area to the Valle ell'Adige, it certainly submitted the domain of Roman Empire. At the fall of the Empire, the remains of Lombard tombs, confirm the presence and subsequent domain by this population.
Mentioned for the first time in a document dated 1214, in 1496 the town was endowed with its own statute (la Regola), with its own laws.
Sites of Interest:
- the Roman ruins, including a stretch of road paved with cobblestones;
- the Castle of Vigolo, strategically located, has lost much of its ancient defensive role, becoming a private residence. Set on fire by Ezzelino Romano in 1256, it was soon rebuilt.
- the Parish Church of San Giorgio, already mentioned since the XIII century, was rebuilt and renovated several times in subsequent centuries. Interesting is an Early Christian bas-relief depicting an olive tree with birds, dated, according to some scholars, to the VII century.
