Acuto

Description

Acuto is a municipality of the Ciociaria area, in the province of Frosinone, located in defense of Sacco valley, on the slope of the mountain with the same name. Although the archaeological finds attest the presence of settlements since the pre-Roman period, the first records date back to the Late Middle Ages, when the village was founded by the inhabitants of Anagni, that sheltered here after the invasion of the Saracens in the area. From the XII century, proclaimed fief under the rule of Anagni and remained so, almost continuously, until it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
Sites of Interest:
- the Church of San Sebastiano, built in the XII century as a simple country church and was decorated with valuable XVII century frescoes;
- the Church of Our Lady of Mount Medium, with a superb stone porch;
- the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the most impressive XVIII century churches in the area. The original structure dates from the XI century and preserves inside a bronze tabernacle and an XVIII century altar piece;
- the Church of St. Peter, built in Lombard-Byzantine style, is one of the oldest buildings in the town;
- the Hospital Church of St. Mary Magdalene, also of very ancient origins;
- the Lake Volubro, located a short distance from the town center and surrounded by untouched lush vegetation.
