Fortunago

Description

A small town of the Oltrepò Pavese area, situated on the hills between the valleys of the Coppa and Ardivestra, Fortunago is a picturesque village with probable Celtic origins (revealed, among other things from the town's name). After the fall of the Roman Empire it was invaded by Germanic peoples, including the Lombards who established their capital in Pavia. In the Middle Ages, the town became the capital of a vast marquisate, which in 1548 passed to Malaspina, and lasted under their rule till the XVIII century, becoming one of the most important centers of the whole area.
The village has kept intact its typical medieval appearance, made up of narrow streets and alleys, narrow stone houses clinging one to each other, following the natural slope of hills, flowered balconies and window sills, arches, stone fountains and the absence of traffic. Here time seems to have stood still.
Among the sites of architectural interest, not to miss:
- The Town Hall, the restructured result of an ancient tower house;
- The remains of the fortress (a tower and a section of perimeter walls);
- The Church of St. Anthony, built in brick and stone;
- The XVII century Parish Church, entitled to San Giorgio, with a central table signed by Pesina (XVI century).
