Gazzo Padovano

Description

The most credible theory on the town's name, attests that it derives from the Lombard word "gahagi" (a land apart), while for others, it comes from the German word "gans" (goose). Municipality in the province of Padua, located on the border with the province of Vicenza, Gazzo Padovano is located along the shores of the River Brenta, in an area rich of water springs and embellished by villas of great value and buildings of architectural and artistic importance, spread between the main centre and its surrounding districts and villages. The economy is based mainly on agriculture, livestock and artistic crafts.
The area was inhabited since ancient times and the origins of the first settlement are very old, even though there is insufficient data to determine accurately the period of its foundation. Documented for the first time in an act of the second half of the XII century, in which is reported the assignment of the territories to the Bishop of Vicenza. During the Middle Ages, Gazzo Padovano was the scenario of the clashes between Venice and Sigismund of Hungary. Originally rich in forests, it submitted a period of deforestation, that brought, in the XIX century, a period of depopulation because in place of the woods, there were vast stretches of unhealthy marshland. Subsequently the area submitted the same historical events that affected the entire province of Padua.
