Giarre

Description

Giarre is located between the cities of Catania and Taormina; its name derives from the Arab language and means terracotta container. It was founded in the XVI century as a hamlet of the town of Mascali; in 1815 it became an autonomous town.
The Mother Church dedicated to Sant'Isidoro Agricola is built in Neo-classical style with two bell-towers: it preserves a beautiful painting of the Vergine e i Santi (the Virgin and the Saints) by Pietro Paolo Vasta (1697-1760), and the Chapel dedicated to S. Lucia, that preserves a painting of 1849 representing the image of the martyr of S. Agata, by Giuseppe Vaccaro (1793-1866).
