Sanluri

Description

Sanluri is with Villacidro, one of the major cities of the Sardinian province of the Medio Campidano and is situated half way between Cagliari and Oristano and its district was already inhabited in remote times.

The agricultural wealth of its lands and the perfect geographic location granted the town with a serious historical importance. Emblem of its past is the Castle, entitled to Eleonora d'Arborea. It was built at the times of the Pisa domination and was completely refurbished in the XIV century. Property of the Villasanta Family, today it hosts the Duca d'Aosta Museum of the Risorgimento with a series of relics of the Independence Civil Wars, the Colonial Wars and the Second World War, swords and pieces of furniture of the Bonaparte Family, the letters of Gabriele D'Annunzio and a rich collection of wax models of monuments, historic figures and religious scenes.

Another famous monument of Sanluri is the Parrish Church entitled to the Vergine delle Grazie, completely rebuilt in late '700 on the ruins of a church of the XVI century, of which only a small piece of the bell tower has been preserved. The actual Piedmont Baroque style and forms are artworks of Carlo Maino and Antonio Ignazio Carta. This is a three-naved church with a transept that proposes two large chapels at the end of each side (one entitled to Sant'Antonio of Padova and another one entitled to San Sebastiano). At the centre of the cross there is a polygonal height with a dome on top.

Inside the church are preserved: The Retablo of Sant'Anna, a series of paintings in tempera of the late '500 and a beautiful Cross of '400.
