Town in the province of Como, located in Val d'Intelvi, Schignano is a beautiful mountain village and popular tourist destination for lovers of tranquility, typical of small villages in close contact with nature. The finding in the village of Occagno of a Gallic tomb complete with grave goods allow the historians to state that the area was inhabited since ancient times.
Within the town centre, between the old streets and squares, little treasures of art of stone-cutters can be discovered, such as: fountains, wash houses, portals.
The Parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, was originally built in Romanesque style but was remodeled in later centuries and offers interesting examples of Lombard art, like the wooden statue of the Assumption and the frontal in plaster.
Interesting is also the Church of St. John the Baptist, in the district of Occagno, which preserves inside a sculpture dating from the XVI century depicting the Pietà and various votive offerings made during the epidemic of plague that struck the area in 1476.
