Stenico

Description

Picturesque town in the province of Trento, located in the Adamello-Brenta Nature Park, in a valley that opens to the South towards the gorge of Sarca, Stenico features typical Tyrolean style houses and palaces, overwhelmed by the presence of the old Castle and surrounded by lush forests and pristine nature. An ideal destination for lovers of long outdoor walks in the open air, in direct contact with the local environment with hiking trails, that consider options also for the most demanding of fans. The entire area has a history of all respect, which started, probably in Prehistoric Ages, and continued, through the Roman times, to the Middle Ages, when the castle became the residence of the Prince-Bishop of Trento, Bernardo Clesio, captain of the Giudicarie with all his court.
According to some historians, the town's name derives from the Stoni, a population of Ligurian origin, from whose dialect comes "Stoen vicus" (village of Stone).

Worth of a visit:
- the Castle of Stenico, a complex of buildings that date from XII and XVI centuries, which today is the seat of the Castle's Museum and the Flora House of the Natural Park Adamello-Brenta;
- the Parish Church of St Vigilio, of which there are records since the early years of the XIII century, rebuilt in the XVI century, today in baroque style preserves within a collection of fine paintings;
- the several fountains and the waterfall of the Rio Bianco;
- the votive Chapels;
- the Botanical Gardens.
