Butera

Description

Butera, whose name probably derives from Bute, the first Sicilian king, is located on a hilly cliff that offers a fantastic panoramic view of the Erei Mounts, the Etna Volcano and the Madonie Mounts.
It was inhabited since the Prehistoric Age and was also characterized by a Greek colonization, by hand of the neighboring Gela.
The city was then conquered by the Arabs and the Normans of Count Roger. In the 14th century, Butera came under the Santapau family's rule. One of its members, Ambrogio, became the Prince of the city.
the Mother Church, dedicated to Saint Thomas and renowned for a work of art by Filippo Paladino, and the 11th century Castle worth a visit.
