Civitella Casanova

Description

Civitella Casanova is a small town in the province of Pescara, set in a hilly area of the Gran Sasso-Monti della Laga National Park. It has Roman origins and in numerous Medieval documents it is mentioned "Civitella dell'abbazia" (Abbey's Civitella), as it was a possession of the abbots of the Monastery of Santa Maria di Casanova. During the XVI century the Caltelmo family, counts of Popoli, administrated the criminal jurisdiction on the town, while the abbots the civil one.

Sites of interest:
- the Church of Santa Maria della Cona, with a beautiful XVI century portal in Renaissance style and a fresco of L'Aquila school;
- the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, dating back to the XVI century;
- the remains of the Abbey of Santa Maria di Casanova, today in the near town of Villa Celiera;
- the Church of San Michele Arcangelo;
- Palazzo Pignatelli, with paintings by Severino Galante;
- a sulphureous spring in Festina hamlet.
