Grumello del Monte

Description

Town in the province of Bergamo, Grumello del Monte is one of the most important and renowned wine centre of the Valcalepio area. It is located at the foot of the first hills of the Orobie Alps and the first human settlement of the area date back to the Paleolithic Age, as many archaeological finds reveal. It is mentioned for the first time in a medieval document with the name of Grumulus. In fact the place name derives from the latin word "grumus" (hill, little mountain) and the word "grumulus" represents its diminutive.
The castle of Grumello is an ancient medieval fortress, dating back to 1222. It is characterised by massive tower and walls and in 1442, when the Republic of Venice took the control of the area, the castle became a Bartolomeo Colleoni's possession. Today it is owned by a wine farm.
The Church of Santissima Trinità, in Baroque style with works by Giovanno Carrobbio, the Sanctuary of Madonna del Buon Consiglio (XV century), the Church of San Pantaleone and the Church of Calvario are interesting too.
