Montignoso

Description

Montignoso is set along the slopes of the Apuane Alps, close to the Versilia coast. The first documents dated back to 754 when the Lombard king, Astolfo, gave an olive grove to the Abbot of the Abbey of Nonantola.
The village is dominated by the imposing Aghinolfi castle, contended by centuries by the military forces of Pisa, Genoa and Lucca, due to its strategic position. It was probably built on the ruins of an ancient Byzanthine fortress; today it is still possible to admire the octagonal donjon, recently refurbished.
The parish church of San Vito and Modesto was built in the XII century and preserves an altar triptych of the painter from Lucca Michele Ciampanti (1482) portraying the "Madonna with Child amongst Saints John the Baptist, Vito, Modesto and Peter".
The Church of Sant’Eustachio dated back to the XV century but it was damnaged during the Second World War. Inside you will find two paintings of the fifteenth century attributed to Maestro del Tondo Lathrop and to Maestro di Stratonica. There is also a wooden sculpture of the Pisan school dating back to the fourteenth century, portraying a Madonna.
