Podenzana
Description
Podenzana is a small town in the province of Massa Carrara, founded during the Early Middle Age around a previously built castle. Due to its position, along the boundary between the valley of the Magra river and the valley of the Vara river, the village was quarrelled between the Bishop of Luni and the local powerful Malaspina's family. It was dominated by the Malaspinas until 1536 when it became an autonomous feud.
The historical centre is characterised by the imposing castle, private property today, totally refurbished in the 50's. it is an manor house with a coat of arms on the façade. It has many large halls, a decorated chapel and an arms hall.
The Romanesque style Parish church of Sant'Andrea, already mentioned by Ottone I in 963, and the XVII century Sanctuary of Madonna della Neve are interesting too.
