Benevento

Description

The city of Benevento is located in a basin between the Sabato and Calore rivers; its surroundings, a high mountain range, are dominated by Mount Taburno.
It was originally called Malaventum, then changed to Beneventum by the Romans in honour of their victory over Piro's army in 275 B.C.
Subsequently it was conquered by the Byzantine and Goths; then Henry III ceded it to the Papal State.
Benevento is rich in many important monuments: the Trajan Arch, perfectly preserved, it was built in 114 A.D. in honour of Emperor Trajan, as a symbol of his glorious conquests. Decorated with bas-reliefs, during the Middle Age it was inserted into the walls of the city, forming the Golden Gate.
Other important monuments of Benevento, also known as the town of witches, are the Roman Theatre, the Rocca dei Rettori, the Cathedral of St. Sofia.

To visit also:
Piazza Duomo
Corso Garibaldi
Hortus Conclusus (kitchen garden of the Convent of St. Dominique)
Rione Triggio (a typical medieval district, set between the Lombard walls and the Calore river).
