On the slopes of Monte Mutria, surrounded by the deep Titerno gorge, stands Pietraroja, a typical mountain town, characterized by a cold climate and especially renowned for the genuineness of its products.
The town probably started out as a Samnite village, founded after the destruction of the ancient city of Telesia.
Don't forget to visit the Geological and Paleontological Park, in Le Cavere, which holds traces of life from around 200 million years ago, with a unique heritage of fossils of vertebrates such as fish, amphibians, reptiles and crustaceans. In 1993, an example of a young carnivorous dinosaur was found, belonging to the "Scipionyx samniticus" species, first in the evolutionary line of the more specialized Velociraptor and Tyrannosaurus, known to the world as "Ciro".
