Codognè

Description

The town's name derives from the Latin "cotognetum" for the presence in the area of several samples of quince apple trees. Municipality in the province of Treviso, the territory of Codognè is rich in water sources: it is a land of springs, and is crossed by several small rivers. This, plus the fact that the area is quite flat, make the land very fertile and suitable for agricultural crops and vineyards, which yield excellent wines. In the area there are also several important industry and craft activities. The area of Codognè is characterized by the presence of beautiful and elegant XVIII century villas.
The area was inhabited since the Roman Ages, who built an important road of which today there are still traces and the town's name of Latin origins, is further evidence of the influence of Rome.
The town is first mentioned in several documents dating from the XII century. During the Middle Ages here settled a Benedictine community, that gave new impetus to the development of the center. The territories were assigned to the Podestaria of Portobuffolè and subsequently was dominated by the French. In 1869 the town enlarged with the annexation of the district of Roverbasso.
