Ponzano Veneto

Description

The town's name of Latin origins derives from the name "Pontius" with the addition of the suffix "-anus" to indicate ownership. Municipality in the province of Treviso, located on the border with the territory of the main regional capital and those of its three districts (Ponzano, Merlengo and Paderno), the town is adorned with villas and palaces built between the XVI and the XVIII centuries. Ponzano is a bustling industrial center dedicated to the production of more diverse items and is home of a major clothing industry business.
It is hypothesized that, thanks to the Via Postumia, several settlements already existed at the time of Roman colonization in the area. In the XI century it is certified that the lands were property of the powerful Ezzelini and remained in the hands of the family until the second half of the XIII century. During the Middle Ages the town was under the domain of Treviso at first, and later belonged to Venice. During the Venetian domain the whole area experienced a period of prosperity and demographic growth and was enriched with fine buildings built by wealthy merchants and the nobility of Venice. With the conquest of Napoleon ended the Venetian rule and gave impetus to the craft activities.
