Occhiobello

Description

Municipality in the province of Rovigo, located on the left bank of the river Po, in a completely flat area in the southern part of the Polesine area. The district of Santa Maria Maddalena is attached to the main town center by a beautiful tree-lined avenue. It is a growing centre with two main attractive and recently renovated city centers.
Archaeological finds show that the area located north of the town was inhabited since Prehistoric times and over the centuries different populations have settled in the area, including the Celts, the Etruscans, the Gauls and the Romans who colonized and enriched the settlements connected to each other by major roads. With the fall of Rome, the Polesine area lived a period marked by destruction and decay. Around the year 754, under the dominion of the Papal State, the town enjoyed a period of recovery in all areas. During year 1000, the centre was subjected to the Marquis Contrari of Ferrara, then to the Este family until the end of the XVI century, when the last Lord died without heirs and all the property was assigned to the Pope. This domain lasted until the arrival of French troops led by Napoleon, to which followed the annexation of the territories to Austria, Rovigo, until it finally was assigned to the Veneto region and to the Kingdom of Italy.
