Roncade

Description

Scholars believe that the town's name is the result of the union of two Latin words "terrae" and "runcatae" with the meaning of "cleared land". Municipality in the province of Treviso, on the border with the territory of Venice, in a flat area full of rivers, including the Meolo and the Sile, which makes its lands particularly fertile and suitable for agricultural crops, Roncade is today , a modern industrial center.
The first traces in the area of a settlement to Neolithic times and several are the findings that document the colonization by Rome, a period in which the centre submitted a certain evolution and ensued an important development. The Romans played a decisive role in the construction of major roads that secured the transportation of goods and the town became an important trading centre. With the gradual disintegration of the Roman Empire, in the III century A.D., the cultivated lands, were prey of the Barbarian raids. In the Middle Ages, the control of the territory was granted to the noble Family of Collalto and subsequently the Venetian noble families built their Summer residences. The long period of Venetian government brought prosperity and tranquility in Roncade, which regained its role as major commercial center. Later subject to the conquest of Napoleon and Austrian, the municipality regained its autonomy when, like other localities of the region, it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy.
